about

This is an album dedicated to those who have faced the struggle and strife, life-altering conditions of armed conflict...an album with no boundaries or time constraints.

Instead of my describing the album in detail, I leave the narrative to your discretion, stating only that it draws on many recorded conflicts, past and present.

To promote this album, I wanted to make sure to not cross any ethical, moral or legal boundaries by showing real people in peril. Enter multi-disciplinary artist, filmmaker, veteran and all-around thinker, Michael Robinson, who does a better job of explaining the point of this album by way of his work in collaboration with me for promotional material, but on the subject of war in general:

Michael Robinson Artist Statement on the Husks of War Project

As an artist and a veteran, I've always held a belief that if people were more fearful of war, we would not exist in the same present we face today. My first animated film was called TV Guided, and it explored the topic of video guided bombs from the angle of a political cartoon, lampooning the reasons we get into war. Looking back on the film now, it was created with a sarcastic edge and dark dystopian humor.

The sensibility for the Husks of War project with Ben is decidedly more grim and more serious in tone. Using Stable Diffusion, AI art software, I programmed the images to reveal three results.

The first result represents aftermath, bombed buildings, that when viewed hit you hard because you can imagine someone may have lived there.

The second set of images are war occurring in a city environment, plumes of smoke and explosions polluting the landscape - often with soldiers in view. These almost have an archival quality but are not meant to be nostalgic representations. Allow me to make this statement and let it resonate within the core of your very being: there is no nostalgia for war. We are inundated with violence in reality and in media, and while it may serve a fictional narrative or a game - it is not something to be lived in or experienced. Let me repeat: there is no nostalgia for war. Nostalgia serves the purpose of fueling and carrying forward past ideas to feed the present, and this work is a line in the sand, a demarcation.

The third set of images are bloodshed, the during and the aftermath. In the news and media, the human cost of war is spruced up, covered up, and often omitted entirely because of overly sensitive viewers. It wasn't always this way. It shouldn't be—and if there wasn't censorship in our media we simply would not be living in the present we have today.

The investment into weapons and military hardware that currently exists is one where I'm clearly saddened. We could have a very different world, turning each nation's military to humanitarian pursuits only and in some limited cases this is already done as an aside. Imagine the kind of world we'd have if the capital we spent on bombs were instead fixed on actual problems like housing the homeless or the advancement of science, medicine, food and agriculture. Our sense of discovery would be unending, new releases of innovation would happen on such a regular basis our cultural collective psyche would be one of constant amazement and hope instead of fear and dread for the next worst thing to happen in the news. You don't get innovation by playing to existing rule structures - you only get innovation when we are brave enough to venture beyond our current boundaries.
